Motorcycle Repair: compression damping, v65 magna, twin spring

Question
I have 1984 v65 magna. The twin spring shocks are not the originals because I have those in a crate. The shocks on the bike are alot shorter (maybe for a 750)The ride feels soft and bottoms out. I turned the lower ring 4 clicks clockwise and that seemed to sit the bike lower.  How do I stiffen the shocks up. I'm just learning how to repair my own bike and the manual only shows how to install.
Thanks for your help

Answer
The damping adjustment won't change the ride height or the spring rate it only changes the rebound characteristics.  The only way I know to keep them from bottoming out is by changing the spring rate.  You can shim the spring or you can change the spring to a stiffer spring or put the original shocks back on. You could also take the springs off the original shocks and put them on if you want to keep the shorter ride height. If the shocks were from a 750, those were lighter bike than the V65 so I'm not surprised they would be too soft.  The owner that changed them must have been shorter and lighter so the shocks were acceptable.
