Motorcycle Repair: 1973 cb350F electrical problem, battery connections, electrical problem

Question
Hello Jim,
First of all,I am a total novice. I just bought my bike, had it out for 20min., stalled out, and couldn't get it started. I am not getting any electricity. No indicator lights, head light etc. I checked the battery connections, and the one fuse I found under the left side cover was fine. I replaced it anyway.  The guy who sold me the bike was a regular rider on it. Is it possible that the battery could be dead? Are there any other fuses that I should check? Also, I can't kick start it. Thanks for your time in answering what seems like a very beginner question.

Answer
You need to put a voltmeter on the battery and check its condition. You need to read 12.5 volts to be able to start it.

You should also check the condition of the charging system by hold the voltmeter on the batter while its running at different RPMs. You want to see 12.5 to 14.5 volts while its running.

If the battery is worn out it will not hold charge for too long so if you don't ride regularly (to recharge it) you may find it won't start. Many people use a Battery Tender to keep their battery fresh while the bike is not being used.
