Motorcycle Repair: 74 amf xlh1000, intermediate jet, rear cylinders

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1974 H-D amf xlh 1000 I got it last feburary. The previous owner told me they had just gotten a s&s shorty type e and ran it to lean, burnt a hole in the pistons, rebuilt it, and let it sit for 5 years. I've gotten it running and idling the question I have is after I let it warm up my front cylinder is noticeabley cooler. The rear cylinders pipe is bluing and there is a little oil leaking out mid way up the cylinder. I don't know if my front cylinder is running to cool or the rear running to hot. Any ideas or suggstions on the matter would be grately appreciated.

QUESTION: They are both black.

Thank you for your time, Bo

Answer
If the plugs are sooty black then either your coil is bad or you are running to rich and need to go to a smaller intermediate jet. I would test the coil and see if its ok first. If they are wet black, like oily, then you need to pull the top end and check the valve guides and pistons. You are getting oil in the heads
Good luck and happy riding
