Motorcycle Repair: Ignition changes, compression pistons, bike mike

QUESTION: Hey Mike, I have recently purchased a custom, well assembled bike that is title as a 95 and I found out it needed a little electrical work when my voltage regulator ground out and sent too much through the ignition and fired it. I have been doing much research since i am currently not able to ride it since it wont run and i am back in Iraq, LOL. What i have been reading a single fire ignition would better fit this bike, i shorted out my dual fire. the bike has serious starter stall even with a great battery and new cables to the battery. I haven't been able to check the alternator since i wasn't able to get a new ignition to start it prior to my leave being over. In your experience does a single fire really benefit a bike by firing that first cylinder? Second, the new gear reduced starters, worth the money? or just go with more cranking amps and bigger starter? Your profile says you build customs and I value your knowledge. 1995 Evo style S&S Cases, was told 1340cc, BDL Open Primary, 75 shovel ratchet top 4 spd with kicker and electric start, Rigid Frame.  Thanks for your help now and i am sure later

ANSWER: Do you know if you have high compression pistons in the bike?

QUESTION: unfortunatley i dont. All can tell is the the S&S stamp on the case and see no markings on the cylinders. Form waht i know about newer S&S motors the case and cylinders have their stamp. I wold assume that it might. I have not dont a compression check to see what it is either. I am sorry i cant follow up better than that

I have found, over the years, that single fire doesnt really help. Besides, you have to change the coil to go to single fire. I am going to assumn that your bike is pretty much stock, and stock it should turn right over. When you try to start it and the starter drags, you might have a bad connection at the battery or where the bike is grounded. If it still turns over hard, you might have a bad starter. I have seen parts, right out of the box, not work. If you go with a higher amp starter, remember a stock battery might not supply it.
