Motorcycle Repair: 1974 Honda 750 Carburetor, honda 750, penetrating oil

Question
This bike hasn't been ridden in 12 years. Removed the carbs, opened the bowl (dusty) blew them out and tried to remove the guts which will not budge. I've only removed the screw-on cap, trying to pull the whole thing out. Do you need to unscrew anything else to get it free, or do I need to soak it to try to free it up? If so, what do your recommend, as the Clymer book says carb cleaner will dissolve the internals which are not available aftermarket? Thanks, Bill

Answer
Bill, there are two jets that are removable, the main jet which is the larger jet in the center and the idle jet which is the smaller jet off to the side a little. I would not recommend soaking the whole carb without fully disassembling it because the carb cleaner will swell up o-rings and any other rubber parts to three or four times their normal size.  You might try gently tapping on the end of the screwdriver with a small hammer as you put torque on it.  I've had some success this way.  Just be very careful or you may break off the jet and then you will be stuck.  Beyond that, you might trying soaking it with penetrating oil and see if it doesn't loosen up.
