Motorcycle Repair: 83 Honda XL250R dies after 20 minutes when hot then restarts when cools, honda xl250r, sulli

Question
Hi Mitch,

I recently picked up a 1983 Honda XL250R for my girlfriend to ride in order to get some two wheel time before she hits the streets on her new Kawi Vulcan. For the first two weeks we had the bike it ran great. We ride it around the track in our yard (for our ATV's and Sleds) and in the surrounding farm fields. About a week ago, while riding, it just died. I pushed it home and in the garage I took out the plug to check for spark. There was none. Thinking I had fouled the plug, I replaced it..no spark either. I let it sit and walked away to cook dinner. About 30 minutes later, she started right up...then after about 20 minutes, she died again....again, no spark. Thinking it was too lean, I took the carb apart and completely cleaned it and replaced the coil with another one. She stayed running longer this time, but still died...again, no spark. Then after about a 30 minute sit, started right up again. For informational purposes, the wiring for the lights and signals have been removed, as well as the battery, by the previous owner. At this point I'm thinking the stator is getting weak. If you could point me in the right direction to fix this, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you,

Sulli
