Motorcycle Repair: deacceleration pop, suzuki marauder 800, sheet metal screw

Question
I have a 1998 suzuki marauder 800. The bike has pop noise on release of throttle, could this be caused by carbs being out of adjustment? Where would i get info on adjusting carbs. Thanks

Answer
Todd,

If your pipes or air cleaner are not stock
you may need bigger carb jets installed.

-on the side of the carb is a little cover
with 3 screws. This is the coasting
valve. It has a little rubber diaphragm
that could be faulty. This valve
enrichens the fuel mixture when decelerating
to prevent afterfire or popping.

-the pilot or idle screw is on the top front
side of the carb. It may be covered with
a plug. The plug has to be removed to
do any adjustments. You can drill with a 1/8" bit 6mm or
less before hitting the top of the idle screw.
Put a sheet metal screw in the drill hole
and wiggle the plug out.
-Turn the idle screw in lightly and back it
out a couple of turns to begin.
You can try turning it out a bit more and see
if it helps the popping.

-slight popping is normal for some bikes.
