Often the stator plug fails and melts down, shorting the wires out and that often takes down the reg-rectifier. The stator wiring should not be grounded to the stator frame or chassis ground.

Hot wires are conducting excessive current, which could either come from full charge output or phases of the stator output being grounded out.
