Question
QUESTION: Mike in `93 I bought a `73 shovel from a guy in Ca. He builds bikes. It was reg. in Ca. as a `73 HD I had no prob in reg it in my name. `99 I move to Ma. No prob in reg. `07 I move to Az. go to reg. Az. seizes my bike, they say the frame is a `78 or 79 not a `73 Ca. gave it a new vin# on the neck in `92 MSO gone. How were the cops able to say it was not a`73 frame. They are going to crush my bike I have had for 15yrs. What other #s or letters are on the frame to determine it is not a `73, they have had it since 9/25/07 I have an attny. but I need an expert on frames HELP!!!!!!!

ANSWER: The only thing you can go by is the vin number that is on the neck of the frame. Was it a harley frame? Does the vin number match the title?

QUESTION: Yes, all the #s issued from Calif. DMV, and the CHP match the bike had to be inspected B4 a new vin # could be placed on the frame, after 4yrs Ca. DMV destroyes all the records, so I can not prove why the frame had a new CA.vin# Again my question is how were the cops able to say the frame was not a`73, but a 78 or 79 the guy who built the bike had to show proof back in `92 all those docu. are now gone

Answer
I am not sure how or what they are using to tell what they think is the difference in the frames. I know here in Ohio, you cannot change vin numbers on a frame or motor. When using a new frame the bike come with a MSO and that is what is used to get a title. The only other problem would be if there is another bike with the same vin number. The other problem might be that the frame vin and the motor vin not matching.
Good luck and happy riding
