Motorcycle Repair: 1980 Honda Cm400 clutch repair, 1980 honda cm400, dremmel tool

Question
QUESTION: what is the torque specs for the spinner nut on the clutch and do you have to have a special tool to do so if so where can you get this

ANSWER: I don't have a manual for that year so I can't tell you the torque spec.  It has a bellville washer under it so it will help keep if from backing off. I'd put something like 35-40 lb-ft on it and it will stay tight.

I made my own spanner socket from an extra socket I had.  I don't know if you can still get them from Honda but you could try them first.  It take a while with a file and hacksaw but it can be done.  If you have a high speed grinder and a cutting wheel, it takes about 15 minutes to make one.  I just made another one last night.

QUESTION: so how do you make one i really app. your help

Answer
Well, the way I did it was to take a dremmel tool with a cut off wheel attachment and make teeth fit inside the spanner nut. I usually hold the socket up to the spanner nut and mark the outline of the teeth so I know where to start cutting.  I then take a file or very carefully use one of the the grinding wheels on the dremmel to remove just enough material to allow the socket to fit in the slots of the spanner nut.

Now, you have to be a little careful because you want all of the teeth on the socket to contact the nut at the same time.  If they don't, the socket will try to twist sideways making it difficult to apply enough torque to loosen the nut by hand.  If you are using an electric or air impact, the precision of the socket isn't as critical.  The force and speed of the impact will get it loose.

Good Luck
