Motorcycle Repair: shifting, petcocks, side shift

Question
i have a 74 sportster, trying to put it in nuetral is becoming a pain, then when i think i have it goes right to 2nd, then trying to put it back in 1st is real tight.  could i be low on fluid? if so what type is best?  also it is right side shift-there are petcocks on both sides, which side would be correct to fill?

Answer
Your problem is the shifter cam is probably worn and needs replaced. It wouldnt be the fluid. In order to replace it you would have to pull the trans to replace it. You need to run 50W oil in the primary. You fill it by removing the small cover on the primary and at the bottom of the primary there is a small screw. remove the screw and with the bike sitting upright you fill it until the oil comes out the hole
Good luck and happy riding
