Motorcycle Repair: no start, system battery, starter motor

Question
Hi Mike, I just bought a '87 sportster. It was upgraded from 883 evo to 1200 and belt drive, S&S carb, lots of chrome. It's a beauty. But I'm having a problem starting. Put in a new battery that doesn't seem to hold a charge. When I hit the start button, the starter motor will give a single click (or grunt) and the engine won't turn. I put a charger on the battery while in the bike for a couple hours and still no-go. Then I noticed the starter was extremely hot to the touch. What's up? Charging system, battery, starter? Also, what are the steps to removing the starter, if I have to do that. Thanks very much. Your the best.

Answer
First make sure your ground wire is good. bad ground and the starter will heat up. If the battery is good and the ground is good then you need to remove the starter and have it tested. to remove it you have to disconnect the battery, remove the primary cover, and hte bolts for it are in the primary
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
