Answer
Randy, the oil filter is centrifugally driven by the small chain off the end of the crankshaft. On the clutch cover you have a round sub cover with three screws.

Check the condition of all the O-rings in and around the filter and outer cover housing.

You can service the filter more easily with the clutch cover removed, but it not completely necessary. Most of the later models have enough room around the filter to catch the filter chain with a small scribe end and loop it over the filter sprocket on the back, as you push it all back in place on the shaft, then into the hole in the case. Be sure to check the alignment of the small pin on the outer end of the shaft. It should be about 12 o'clock so it can engage with the outer filter cover. The thrust washer goes on the outside of the filter body, so the locating pin doesn't dig into the filter as it spins.

I have restoration guides on CD, if you need all the information that is available on Honda Dream series machines.
