Motorcycle Repair: Evo oil pump gear shaft, gear shaft, half moon

Question
I sheared a key in the drive gear and my manual says the shaft can be removed with engine and trans in frame.My question is how,the shaft is against the trans before it comes out?I have a spot where the half moon key goes and want to replace the pump and shaft.Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

You never said what year or model you have, but generally the pump and shaft have to come out together when removing them. There are a few models that the motor had to be tipped to get the oil pump out due to clearence.
