Motorcycle Repair: oil leak, crank case, oil tank

Question
QUESTION: she's a 1990 FLHS, I rode /07 with no problems at all. A couple of oil drips every couple of days. Parked in the fall, (inside warm garage)and put the cover on. A month latter took the cover off and saw a large puddle of oil under the bike. Located the source, a shaft coming straight down out of the crank case. Looks like it should have a hose on it. turned the bike over a couple of times and the oil comes pumping out. did I loose a part? where should that oil be pumping to?. Can't figure it out please help.

ANSWER: where is this shaft located? Is it close to the oil pump on the inside?

QUESTION: inside bottom of the crank case

Answer
The location you are talking about is probably the vent. Over time, since your oil tank is sitting higher than your motor, oil will weep through the oil pump. There is a ball and spring in the pump that is suppose to stop this, but there might be a speck of dirt holding it open. Oil can fill the bottom of the motor. Check your oil tank and it it really low then that is the problem. you can start the bike, but put a pan under it, and it will pump the oil out. SOme goes to the tank and some will go on the floor, but it will clear itself
Good luck and happy riding
