Motorcycle Repair: head gasket leak- 77 honda cb750k, head gasket leak, honda cb750k

Question
Had bike to local shop for state inspection. Do not want to give inspection because of a head gasket leak. Mech said to get good high temp sealant or gasket maker, clean area well with cleaner and seal. Is this possible?, what is good product to use to clean and seal?, and what would the procedure be? Any help greatly appreciated

Answer
Dave, go to any auto parts store and look for some high temp, oil resistant RTV silicone sealant. Clean the area with brake cleaner or contact cleaner, so it is nice and dry, then use a thin stick or tool to work the sealer into the edge of the gasket, where the leak was coming from. Let it setup overnight and it should be good to go for awhile.

This is a common problem with old Honda Fours, as they have high pressure oil coming up the outside edge passageways, through the gasket and up to feed the cam and rockers. There is an O-ring around the fitting to prevent this from leaking, but they loose their tension after many years and heat cycles, so allow oil to migrate through the edges of the gasket material. Gotta pull the motor to get the headgasket off.. FYI.
