QUESTION: 1981 superglide starter in need of repair, can it be removed easily? it's in a rigid frame with wraparound oil tank. time for a ground up custom rebuild?

Answer
Start will just unbolt from the inner primary and slide out under the oil tank. As to the time for a ground up rebuild, that would have to be determined by you. If your motor is knocking in the bottom end, it sounds like a rod going out.
If you are interested, I can give you a quote for a ground up rebuild.
Good luck and happy riding
