Motorcycle Repair: 89 ultra classic starer hangs, bolt torque, battery cables

Question
on our '89 ultra classic we installed a new starter and battery and it will not start without jumping it. It turns then drags then turns but will not start on its own.  We checked the jackshaft bolt torque and its good. While checking the jackshaft bolt we found a snap ring(many pieces) in the primary and have no idea where it came from.  the ring on the front of the clutch hub is there and the one for the jackshaft is there. Was wondering where this could have come from and also if you know why the starter hangs. Maybe the 2 problems are related.

Answer
I would first check to see where the snap ring came from. You have one holding the bearing in the clutch and one holding the release plate for the clutch.
If your starter is draging, check the battery cables. If they are old, replace them. I would also replace the breakers. Over time they can get weak.
Good luck and happy riding
