Motorcycle Repair: spark advance 68 cl350, compression stroke, cl350

Question
I have a spark advancer that was removed from the bike without the lobe of the cam getting marked for reinstallation.  I know that I have a 50/50 chance of reinstalling the cam properly.  Without trying to start the motor, (it doesn't run right now), what steps can I take to determine the proper placement of the cam.  thanks

Answer
Tom, the process of setting up the ignition timing will tell you immediately, whether the point cam is in correctly or not.

Remove the valve cover caps, so you can watch the valve action, then turn the engine over, until you are coming up on the compression stroke. The timing mark is usually 5 degrees before TDC Compression. If you see the points just start to open, prior to the T mark on the compression stroke, then the point cam is correct. If not, take it apart, turn it 180 degrees and redo the timing setup again.
