Motorcycle Repair: Sportster starter motor., corrotion, optimate

Question
Hi Mike,  I have a 2004 Sportster 1200C, with 7000 miles up.  When I operate the starter motor, very often there is a hesitation after the initial short turnover, of about half a second, then the starter picks up again and turns over.  This has been happening for the last three months or so, but seems to be getting more noticeable.  I have charged the battery on an Optimate, and it really didn't need much of a charge, it is still in good condition.  Occasionally there is a loud clanking noise when the starter is operated also.
The starter symptom has occurred on three previous Harleys in varying degrees in the past, especially on a Softail Heritage.
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Many thanks,  John.

Answer
Make sure you have good battery wires and that they are connected tightly at both ends. Check the ground for corrotion. If the timing is to far advanced it will kick back, so check the timing. If it is still draging then you would need to pull the starter and test it.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
