Motorcycle Repair: Top end on an ultra, apear, compression test

Question
Hi Mike,

I'm looking to buy this 2002 ultra for 10,500 it has 64,475mi on it. Doesn't apear to be any damage. I did see some sort of fan on it that i've never seen before.

At what point would you think I would have to do the top end?

What would the cost be?

Should I run for this bike or runaway from it?

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks,

CJ

Answer
I am asked this question alot. When the top end needs done is determined by how the bike was maintained and how hard the bike was ridden. I have seen 80,000 miles on bikes with no motor wirk done. You can have a shop check it out for you, by doing a compression test and a bleed down test. This will tell you if the rings are leaking by.
As to the cost, I cannot tell you. Prices differ all over the country and I have no way of telling what they are.
The vlaue of the bike is excellent condition is around 14,000, depending on what part of the country you live. If you bought it for the 10,500 and had to do a top end on it you would probably still be ahead.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
