Motorcycle Repair: 1982 v45 magna honda, v45 magna, soleniod

Question
I have a 1982 v45 magna honda; the bike has been starting and running fine. It began to click around the soleniod and nothing was occuring with the starter. I removed the started checked it and it ran fine when tested on a battery. After putting it back on and attempting to start the bike it just clicks at the solenoid. The headlight will deam down but it doesn't turn over. Is the solenoid bad? and how can I tell? I had a freind who said this sounds like a ground problem I have checked and cleaned all connections with no help.I would like to know what you think before ordering a new solenoid.

Answer
John,

when you hear the solenoid click there should
be a connection between the two bigger solenoid
terminals. One side goes to the battery and the
other to the starter. Make sure your battery is good.
-If there is a connection between these terminals
and the starter doesn't work then your starter
may be stuck or faulty. Try connecting a battery
to the starter directly.
