Motorcycle Repair: rocker box gaskets 2001 883 sportster, rubber gaskets, rocker boxes

Question
QUESTION: Hi Mike,
I am leaking oil from the top of the rear jug of my 2001 883 Sportster. I am guessing that the rocker box gasket needs to be replaced. What causes this? Compression? Oil filled too high?
I don't have a lot of cash so I didn't buy the repair manual and can't send it to a shop.
I was wondering if you can tell me if changing out the gasket is straight forward and if there are any torque values I need to reseat the bolts after it is changed out.
Are there any hidden tricks I should be aware of in order that I don't break anything I will encounter?
I appreciate your help.
Joe

ANSWER: Leaking oil is from a gasket failing. If doesnt have anything to do with compression or to much oil.
Which section of the rocker boxes is it leaking?

QUESTION: Mike,
The left rear corner of the jug as I am sitting on the scooter. It would be the right corner as I kneel to look at it. It is getting worst as I have ridden the bike 5 times since I first noticed it. The oil level in the tank doesn't drop significantly.

Thank you.
Joe

Answer
Remove the gas tank. Remove the top cover, center ring and lower rocker box. In order to get the lower out you will have to remove the pushrods. Make sure you mark them as they are different lengths. replace the gasket and install the lower rocker box and the pushrods. Install the bolts. Dont worry about torques, just tighten them tight. Install the rubber gaskets and the top cover and tighten the 4 bolts and install the gas tank
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
