Motorcycle Repair: 1974 yamaha DT100, yamaha dt100, point gap

Question
I was riding my cycle and i stopped and turned it off. When i went to start it again it would not start.I had no spark so i cleaned up the points and put a new sparkplug in and got spark. It still did not start.Inoticed that there was gas coming out of the exhaust manifold and checking the plug it was soaked to.Itook out the carb and cleaned it out and ajusted the floats. No more flooding but still not firing up.Any other suggestions could the timing gone out.Do you know the points gap what is th proper float adjustment.Any advise is helpfull thanks alot

Answer
Ian,

-the point gap adjusts your ignition timing.
-There should be timing marks on the flywheel
and the engine case. The points should just
break open when these marks align.
-You can use a timing light once you
have it running.
-The engine is likely flooded with gas
and may need some pushing or kicking
to clear it out.
-Check the compression
to make sure it isn't engine problems.
It should blow your finger off the
spark plug hole easily if you don't
have a gauge to check it with.
-The points gap should not be set
too wide or they may not close.
They should have about a .014"
gap with the timing marks aligned.
-The float is set around 3/4" or 20mm.
Just make sure it is not running
over into the engine, otherwise
the float bowl can be run fairly full.
If you have a good spark, fuel flow
okay to the carb and compression,
it should start. You may need
to try a few dry spark plugs until
the flooding situation clears up.
