Motorcycle Repair: katana clutch wont disengage, clutch linkage, clutch plates

Question
I have a 1990 suzuki Katan 600 and It was sitting for a while and now when I start it and try to put it in gear the clutch wont engage so as soon as I shift it drops in gear and dies. I have tried adjusting the clutch linkage and that doesn't help so maybe you can shine some light on the subject? Thanks in advance for your help.  -Kevin-

Answer
Kevin,

you said "clutch won't engage" but I'm suspecting
you mean the opposite, that it won't
disengage so you can put it in gear?
I hope I got it right, this is usually
caused by the clutch plates sticking together
while a bike is parked. They sometimes
will break loose if you get it warmed up
and try driving it in a safe place.
If they are stuck very badly,
the clutch would have to be disassembled
and the plates inspected, cleaned or replaced.
While sitting, the plates can rust or
corrode a bit making them stick.
This is all assuming that your linkage
feels normal.
