Motorcycle Repair: 85 vulcan 700 wont start after warm, check air filter, excessive fuel

Question
The bike starts fine when first started. After a few minutes if you shut it off it will turn over but will not start unless it sits for ~10+ min. I have put on new plugs and wires. Also intermittently it misfires and bucks around 2000 rpm. Any ideas would be very much appreciated. I have had the carburetors out (ugly) and tried to cleanup what I could without having to separate the two but did not seem to help.

Answer
Harry,

-Have you checked for good fuel supply
to the carbs, fuel filter?

-Next time it won't start, have a good
spark plug handy and check for spark.

-If it looks ok, take some carb cleaner
or wd40, spray it into the carbs and see
if it fires, if not maybe it is flooded.

-Try new spark plugs, make sure the battery
is fully charged and cables are tight,
important for good spark.

-The plugs should be light brown or tan color.

-Lastly the ignition pulse generator unit
on the left end of the crankshaft can break
down when hot.

-Coils, fuses, wiring, connectors
are possible suspects. Check for corroded connectors
or loose wires.

-If your spark plugs are black you may
have excessive fuel problems,
check air filter, choke, carbs,
tank vent.
