Motorcycle Repair: 1971 honda sl125, rotor engine, emery cloth

Question
My bike has been sitting inside for 20 plus years . I t was my first bike when I was 13. I have gone over the carb. Replaced the float and the o rings. I have put a new seat/needle valve in. I do have fuel, however I do not have any spark. I checked the rectifier and that is fine. I ask the dealer to check the coil, but he said they don't go bad. I have a brand new spark plug in it. Can you point me in the right direction?? Please advise!!

Answer
Don,

I had a SL100 when I was about 14, I know these bikes
quite well.
-Top left side of your engine is a chrome cover with
two screws in it. This is where your contact points
are. Likely they are corroded from sitting.
They can be cleaned with a little fine emery cloth
and slide some clean paper between to clean
the dust off. When the contacts look clean,
you can remove the lower left engine cover.
It will leak a little oil.
Turn the rotor/engine with a wrench until the points
are open, the "F" mark on the rotor
will be near the case pointer or just past.
Set the points to a .014" gap. Tighten the screw
and check if the points open when the "F"
mark aligns with the case mark or pointer.
You can use a multimeter or test light to
check this. The key will need to be on.
Remove the spark plug wire so the bike
doesn't start while checking this timing.
Here is a webpage that may explain it
better with some animations. You
will have only one set of contact points.
