Motorcycle Repair: 1977 FLH charging system, ac volts, electronic regulator

Question
I have A 1977 FLH. I just had the whole bike rewired. My wife took it out for a 70 mile ride last night and it was running strong. At the end of our ride we stopped for a cold one and it stalled out. She tried to restart it and the battery was dead. The dilemma is that her headlights did not dim prior to and the bike ran strong the whole way. We tried to re-start it but we got absolutely nothing. no lights no turn over. I went home and got my truck and hooked charging cables up and it started no problem, headlights on also. I checked with my meter and when the bike is running I get 11.9 volts reading from the batery. What are the specs to check the stater and the electronic regulator? Or do you have any other trouble shooting ideas???? Randy Hazel

Answer
Fist, do a OHMs test on the stator. Test at both prongs ont he statror and then to ground. Start the bike and at the stator you whould get about 60 AC volts at 2000 RPM. This is AC volts, not DC. If the stator passes the above tests then the regulator is bad. There is not test for the regulator
Good luck and happy riding
