Motorcycle Repair: Engine wont turn over, haynes repair manual, starter clutch

Question
I just purchased a 1982 Yamaha XJ650L, and the engine won't turn over.  I was told the engine turned over recently and I would just have to remove and clean the carbs. I removed and cleaned all four of them.  I replace them and tried to crank it up. I can hear the starter switch by the battery, and I hear the starter rotating, but the engine isn't turning over.  I took the right cover off the clutch and I can see the starter gear turning the gear on the inside, but nothing else is turning.  Can you tell me what else I can do.  I am fairly good with my hands and I have the Haynes repair manual for the motorcycle, but I don't know what else to do. Thanks, Virginia

Answer
Virginia,

it sounds like the starter clutch is slipping or some related
gear. The manual should show the starter clutch and how
to remove it. It is held on with a circlip.
You should watch carefully how you dissemble
things and even take pictures if you have a digital camera.
You can also check the clutch while working there.
The starter clutch has some little rollers and springs which
may be damaged or possibly wear on other parts which should
be checked. It is a one-way clutch that allows the starter
to turn the engine and then slip when the engine starts.
Check for any broken gear teeth that could be causing a slip.
Most likely it is the starter clutch though.
