Motorcycle Repair: 1987 Yamaha Virago 1100, starter solenoid, starter problem

Question
I have a starter problem only when the bike is hot. I can ride about 20 mins and shut the bike off then restart it y with no problem. However, rides of 1 to 2 hours have resulted in a no start situation after shutting the bike down for 10 to 40 minutes.  After a couple hours the bike starts no problem. I have had no probloms while the bike is running. Fuel pump doesn't prime or anything when the problem occurs. Please advise. Thanks

Answer
Al,
is it the starter that quits turning or the
bike just won't start? The heat may be affecting
the starter solenoid or relay. It could possibly
be the starter also. Take a test light with you,
when it stops check for power to the starter.
If no power, move up and check for power
at the solenoid. If you have power to the starter
then you know the starter is the problem.
If the starter is turning okay and the bike won't
start, it could be in the ignition pulser unit.
They break down when hot.
Other suspects are bad connectors, starter button,
ignition switch. Tough to find because it is an
intermittant problem.
