Motorcycle Repair: shocks and exhaust, vf750 magna, carburetor jets

Question
I own a 82 Honda v45 vf750 magna. Shocks are the two cylinder type, can not get a good ride.Theres no give what so ever, even on soft setting. Some have told me that it takes a special oil in them and some say to put air in them. There is a air valve on the smaller cy;inder.Have tried the air up to 20lbs.,didn,t make adifference in the ride. Were this shocks noted for there hard ride.If so what can I switch to to make the ride more comfortable. Thinking of maybe trying some sort of air shocks, but can only find ones that are 1in.shorter than the original ones, will this still leave me with enough clearence between fender and wheel, even with a passenger.

As for the exhaust can I change the existing mufflers and go to some sort of straight pipes with out hurting the motor,or lossing any engine performance. Thanks Randy

Answer
Randy,
have you checked your tire pressure, maybe
a lower pressure would soften the ride a bit.
Your shocks may have problems, although they
don't have much travel when new.
Try these guys, maybe they can help:

The clearance depends on the shock travel
and spring pre-load, you can adjust the shock
stiffer for carrying loads or passengers.
Changing the exhaust sometimes requires
alot of tuning to get the fuel mixture
correct. Less backpressure results in a lean
fuel mixture and so carburetor jets need to
be changed also. Performance may go up or down
depending on how well the pipes work out
after tuning.
