Motorcycle Repair: 1988 Virago 1100 not starting, virago 1100, motor brushes

Question
My virago is having some starting issues, when the problem started the solenoid would click, but now I'm down to just a click under the seat. When this problem first started I pulled the solenoid off took it to a starter shop and had it tested and it tested to be good. This isn't one of those under the seat small solenoids it bolts through the left side case. I put the solenoid back on and the bike worked fine for a couple of weeks then began having trouble again. I could pull the battery out slightly and and put it back then hit the start button and it would start. Now I'm down to just a click on one of the relays under the seat. I've tried jumping across the solenoid and have fire but still no start nor soleniod click. had the solenoid checked off the bike again and it still reacts when 12 volts are applied. Starter spins freely when 12 volts are applied. What else could be the problem??

Answer
Hi Carl,

Common causes are... loose battery cable connections, corroded cables, weak or defective battery, corroded/defective stater button contacts, worn starter motor brushes, Defective satey switch(es), and worn/defective solenoid.
