Motorcycle Repair: speedo, kawasaki kz1100, continuity check

Question
I have a 1982 kawasaki kz1100-d1 spectra. The speedometer does not work. It has an electronic sensor on the front wheel. I tried replacing it with a used one. Mine still did not work. I replaced the speedo then as well and still did not work.   These parts worked on the bike they came off of.  What else should I look for? How do I check the electronic sensor? It is a 3 wire.  A continuity check on the wires that seems to be ok as well.  Thanks for your help. Mike

Answer
Mike,
If you are sure the parts are correct and working,
I would suspect a lack of power to the sensor,
possibly from a loose connector or bad wire.
The three wires on Kawasaki's speed sensor are generally:
(with the key on)
Black wire with yellow stripe is ground.
Light green wire with black stripe is 12 volts.
Light green with red stripe is speed signal, maybe 6 volts.
This may apply only to newer models, I don't know for sure.
It might be a good time to get a manual with wiring diagrams. Clymer has one for your bike I believe.
