Motorcycle Repair: backfire on deceleration, exhaust gaskets, cv carb

Question
I have a 1994 heritage softail. It has quite a few miles on it but still runs fine. I have a cv carb and Samson exhaust and it has been dyna jetted. I was tired of oil coming from the breathers into the k&N filter so I put on a Arlen ness Big Sucker and now when I back off the throttle it backfires a lot. Do I need to rejet or just adjust or do something else? Thanks!

Answer
Since you already had a K&N filter you shouldn't need to rejet.  If you are not running baffles that could make the difference.  If you don't want to run baffles, torque cones at the heads might solve the problem.  Another cause of backfiring is exhaust manifold leaks at the head.  If the Samson pipes have flat ends at the head, you need the flat exhaust gaskets.  If the pipes have rounded ends the Harley beveled gaskets will work the best.  Check your plugs for color to see if you need rejetting.  Blacker plugs means it's too rich and white center electrodes means it's too lean.
