Question
QUESTION: G'day, i have a YZ250F 03mdl and i cant not start it with the kick starter feels like there is no compresion, it starts if i push start it after a couple attempts. sombody told me it mite be my valves so i opened it up and not to shore if i am measureing the clearance correctly, i tried to slide the feeler gauge between the cam lobe and the pad and it was to tight the smallest gauge i got is 0.22. could it be piston and rings? as i said not much compression on the kick start. any info is appreciated thankyou.
ANSWER: It needs the valves done. The intake should be around .11 and the exhaust .19.i would do the valves and when you are there you can do a leak down test.

You first have to bring the motor to top dead center(piston at the top of the motor). The intake valve will open.In the manual it will give you your specs on the valves. When checking the clearances it will help to have feeler gauges that range from the lowest settings for your specs to the highest. The feeler gauges should slide in but be alittle snug, not being forcefull at all.Aleak down tester can be bought from your local dealer. It basicall looks like a air gauge with a hose fitting that will screw into your spark plug and the other to a compressor line. When testing you will bring the motor up to a certian pressure by applying the air and then leave it.The gauge will tell you how much air pressure you ahve and after a minute you should lose no more then %15 of the air that was added. If this is something that you want to do i can walk you through it.
