Motorcycle Repair: starting problem, shut-off problem, yamaha virago, electrical coil

I have a 1984 Yamaha Virago XV1000. It will not crank. Suspect the solenoid. How can I test whether it may be the solenoid or the starter?

Also, say your answer on looking at the electrical coil for a bike that runs for 5 minutes then shuts off. Would this still be true if the bike runs for 10-12 minutes, then shuts off? After it cools down, it will run again for 10-12 minutes and shut down.

        Not a very safe way but quick and east-jump the solenoid to see if the starter turn over.if it does....solenoid is bad.Or we can go the technical route and do a ohm test and see if the solenoing have juice on the starter side when the button is pressed.Glad i could help
