Motorcycle Repair: starting problem, starter solenoid, spyke starter

Question
QUESTION: hi! hers my question ,i have a 96 inch motor and recently put in new valves and lifters and roller rockers .i adjusted the pushrods and try to start ,and all it does is kind of growl like its fighting compression .i also replace all electrical ,spyke starter ,solenoid ,high crank battery, new welding cable battery .and still all i get is the motor almost turning .could it be that valves are not adjusted or timing off ,relay baffled and frustrated .help if you can .thanks frank
ANSWER: First, make sure the battery is filly charged. Let it trickle charge overnight. Once the battery is done charging and it is still doing it then check your ground cable to make sure you have a good ground. Check the positive cable to make sure its tight at both ends. If you are still having problems after that let me know
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: hi mike . i bled the lifters and installed them ,but when i adjusted the pushrods all i could get was one turn ,book called for three turns .when i rotated the engine by hand i had no compression with the one turn,so i backed off to 3/4  turn and i had compression back ,but seems like valves are still not operating right .almost like to much compression all the time ,starter really having a hard time on first couple of turns .is it possible the new lifters are collapsing? and i can,t adjust right.i load tested new battery and plenty of power ,load tested new starter and is fine ..i never touched the ignition still set from before valve replacement. thanks for your reply frank

Answer
Lets start by adjusting the valves. Start with the front exhaust. Tunr the motor until the pushrod is in the upward position (opening the valve). Now tighten the pushrod three or four turns and let the bike sit for about 15 minutes. Check the pushrod. If its tight then its bled. If you can rotate it between your fingers then it not and you have to tighten it more and then wait. Keep doing this until you can turn it. Now back it off about 2 turns and it will be loose. Do this for each one. It will take some time. If it doesnt tun over let me know
