Motorcycle Repair: 1979 CB650 carb issues, wisconsin weather, narrative description

Question
Hi Mark,
I have aquired a 1979 CB650. This bike sat out in the beatiful Wisconsin weather for 10 years uncovered. Against all odds, I got it running again. I intially took the carbs off and cleaned the jets and bowls with carb cleaner and some small wire from a bread bag for the REALLY plugged ones. I got it going, but it would never run without at least half choke, not to mention that #3 wasn't firing at low idle. I took the carbs off again and recleaned the jets, doing a better job this time.
Now the bike is flooding. It will start with quite a bit of persistance, and a little starting fluid and NO choke. All the cylinders are hitting now at idle speed, and there is the charecteristic white smoke of too much gas. The carbs are not overflowing, and I didn't change any of the carb settings. I have tried monkying a little with the fuel screw next to the bowls, on a two of the carbs, thinking that maybe that would give me some insight, but, no differnce.
I am pretty handy with a wrench, and have fairly good insight into mechanical endeavors, but I have to admit, I am no mechanic. I probably know just enough to make me dangerous, but I am also too cheap to take it to a professional. Any advice??
FYI I have read, and payed attention to your carb cleaning 101

Answer
Hi Calvin,

lol... You're funny, Sir. Very good narrative description, thanks.

I'm confident that you're doing a good job of cleaning the carbs, however, I suspect they need to be more thoroughly cleaned.

Carbs in such condition should be soaked is a product such as Berryman's Chem-Dip and then hand cleaned. I'd even use the sonic cleaning tank.

You'll have to inspect the entire fuel system for evidence of varnished fuel, rust, and any other contamination. Contaminants upstream of the carbs will immediate re-contaminate clean carbs. Clean, repair, or replace parts accordingly.

Inspect the spark plugs frequently and keep them clean and dry. Ensure the air filter is in good condition and there are no air intake obstructions.

Additionally, cylinder compression and valve clearances must be within service limits (specs) for the carbs to function properly.

The carbs should be synchronized after cleaning.

Air/fuel screws affect idle and just off idle performance.

If you provide me with an email address, I'll return additional tech files to assist you.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
