Motorcycle Repair: 1983 Goldwing GL1100, throttle assembly, gwrra

Question
My throttle will not move. I think the throttle cable is frozen. How do I disconnect the cables where they run down to the engine ? Do I have to remove the gas tank to be able to disconnect and re-connect the cable. The cables have  an aluminum round thing ( ball ) on the end...how does that thing come out ? If I get the cables loose, I can see if the carbs are stuck or if it is the cables that are stuck. Will anybody out there give me their phone # so I can call and ask about other questions to get my bike running and on the road. I haven't had it running yet. I have to free the throttle before I try to start it. I sold my 85' Honda V-30 last April. I had owned it for 10 years. Bought this 83' GL1100 Feb 23 and I would love to talk to some Goldwing folks. I am a little nervous about this hugh bike and would appreciate a few pointers. I have worked mainly on cleaning it and also re-doing the brakes. I took off the saddlebags and trunk to do the brakes. I will probably put the trunk back on and leave the saddlebags off...any thoughts ?  Thanks. JerryAMCFan@yahoo.com

Answer
Jerry, it sounds like you are in for a MAJOR redo of this bike, if the throttles are stuck. For base info go to:

http://www.classicwingclub.org/  they specialize in GL1000s, but much of the design is similar to yours.

GET A SHOP MANUAL PRONTO!  www.helminc.com or Ebay, perhaps or try the GoldWingRidersofAmericaAssn.  http://www.gwrra.org/

I owned one Gold Wing for about a week, 15 years ago, so am not current on all of the details of that machine.

As I recall, you can remove the carbs w/o pulling any bodywork from above. You can see where the cables enter the carb rack and where to disconnect them from. You have to pull the cables loose from the carb end before you can pull the entire cable from the throttle assembly. There are two cables, one pulls the throttles open and the other pushes the carbs closed.

Go also to bikebandit.com and look through the online microfiche illustrations for your bike.

Plan on removal and overhaul of the carbs, cleaning the complete fuel system, then the whole hydraulic system. The clutch may be stuck if it has been sitting for years, too.

Hope you have good tools, a big place to work on this monster and lots of patience and dollars!
