Motorcycle Repair: timing magnito ignition, time mike, intake valve

Question
about a year ago i removed my magnito to cheak the ignition coil.  I accedently used the kickstart to get up and sice then it takes 10-20 kicks sometimes more to start.  pull starting works right away. I timed it exactly to my harley and clymer manual specs. evey one says scrap the magnito and get a distributor, battery, and coil, but i like the vintage look of the magnito. i also replaced the kiker gears before this happened but it started fine.  I had an S&S on there but traded that for a bendix that helped a little. any info or old tricks would help alot.    THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!!!!!   MIKE

Answer
First, check to make sure you dont have it 180 degrees out of time. Find top dead center. It will happen right after the front intake valve shuts. Then look for the mark on the flywheel. Once you have it check the lobe on the mag. If its out then you need to rotate it.
Make sure the coil is good, the plugs are set right and the points are set right. If not, then they are a bear to start.
When starting, hold the kill switch and kick the bike over about 3 times. this will put gas inthe cylinder. Next, kick it hard and it should start.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
