Hi Andy,

Review the following intel. Visit the links listed below and inquire accordingly.

GSX-R Interchangeable Parts

LATE MODEL 17" RIMS RETRO FITTED TO EARLY GSX-R's:

This is a relatively straight forward swap. If you learn which parts will fit on your bike BEFORE you buy the parts, you'll avoid paying a machinist to fabricate spacers and brackets. This chart was published in the HANDS-ON section
of SPORT RIDER magazine (Feb. 1995).

GIXXER WHEEL SWAPPING CHART (courtesy of SPORT RIDER Magazine)

REAR WHEELS:

Model   Wheel Size   Sprocket Carrier   Disc outside diameter
1985-87 750   18x3.5"   5-bolt   8.675"(220mm)
1986-87 1100   18x4.0"   5-bolt    8.675"(220mm)
1988 1100   18x4.5" (3-spoke type)   5-bolt   8.675"(220mm)
1988-89 750   17x4.5"   5-bolt   9.5"(240mm)
1989-90 1100   17x5.5"   6-bolt   9.5"(240mm)
1990-91 750 (U.S. '92 same)   17x5.5"   6-bolt   9.5"(240mm)
All rears use 20mm axle
86-87 carriers will NOT fit on 88-89 wheels!

FRONT WHEELS:

Model   Wheel Size   Axle Size   Disc Outside Diameter
1985-86 750   18x2.5"      (small as f**k!)   15mm   11.8" (300mm)
1986 1100   18x2.75"    15mm   12.2" (310mm)
1987 750   18x2.5"   17mm   11.8" (300mm)
1987 1100   18x2.75"   17mm   12.2" (310mm)
1988 1100   18x2.75" (3 spoke type)   20mm   12.2" (310mm)
1988-89 750   17x3.5"   20mm   12.2" (310mm)
1989-90  1100   17x3.5"   20mm   12.2" (310mm)
1990-91 750 (U.S. '92 same)   17x3.5"   20mm   12.2" (310mm)

KATANA CABLE CLUTCH CONVERSION FOR EARLY 750/1100:

If you have one of the original Gixxers and have a damaged master cylinder or just want to have the convenience of a cable clutch, you can fit the lever, cable and engine sprocket cover from a Katana 600 on the GSX-R series engines. The sprocket cover from the Katana has the cable mechanism in place of the hydraulic slave cylinder on the early Gixxer. Once you change out the sprocket cover (keep and use the stock actuating rod) just use the Katana cable and the lever of your choice and you're done.

RETROFITTING LATE MODEL FRONT FORKS:

This is a nice way to get around bothering with the front wheel retrofit- install a whole new front end. The front end from a 1992 GSX-R 750 quickly and easily mounts onto a 1986 GSX-R 750.  Remove the upper clamp, drop the forks out, slid the new fork in, adjust the bearings, torque fasteners and be done in about an hour.
