Motorcycle Repair: 94 Intruder 800 loses Electrical, intruder 800, safety switches

Question
I have a 94 Intruder with a little over 9k miles.  I have ridden it regularly since I purchased it in September.  Just recently I was out riding and my bike would lose power when I came to a stop.  The bike dies and the lights go out.  Without doing anything the lights come back on and I can start the bike again.  The problem seems to be more frequent when the bike is in riding position (as opposed to being on the kickstand).  I have some auto mechanical skills but am not sure where to start on motorcycles.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Oh how annoying this must be for you. I'm more concerned about safety though. You wouldn't want to be on a 4-lane road and have this happen. Some thoughts... check battery (a real test of battery condition not just volts), check battery leads - are they tight. Is ground wire tight on both ends? If there is a kickstand safety or other safety switches I would test these  for proper functioning. See your service manual electric section for testing. Many possibilities here.
