Motorcycle Repair: back to stock jets?, fuel mileage, stock specs

Question
i just purchased a '99 roadstar 1600 from a friend. he installed baffled pipes and had the carb rejetted. the mileage is poor and i believe running too rich. can i have it rejetted back to stock specs and leave the louder pipes. he did not change out the whole exhaust system, just slip-on part. i like the sound but care more about the life of the bike and fuel mileage. Thx Bill

Answer
Hi Bill,

Changes to the exhaust and intake requires jetting changes to correct air-fuel mixtures.

In most cases, slip-ons have marginal effects on exhaust gas flow, though still usually require some tuning.

Only testing and tuning will determine what jetting combinations will produce optimum results.

If you make any changes to the carbs, make only one change at a time to know the effects each change makes.

Record the nuber of turns out from lightly seated each screw is prior to tuning air/fuel screws.
