Answer
Hi Josh.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START THE BIKE UNTIL YOU HAVE REPAIRED/REPLACED ANY OBVIOUSLY DAMAGED/MISSING PARTS/COMPONENTS.

At best, the bike won't start, at worst, something catastrophic could happen to either you or the motor.

Get the repair manual for the bike.  Read through it before you attempt to repair anything that you are unsure of doing.

If you have no repair manual, then they can be ordered through the local bike shop/Yamaha motorcycle dealership or online through the following;

www.repairmanuals.com

www.jcwhitney.com

www.totalmotorcycle.com

The manual will cover almost everything that you will need to know, other than asking about the odd issue that is not covered in it.

 The shifter won't get you more than what you have gotten because the motor is not running.  Generally, you won't be able to shift above 2nd gear unless the bike is in motion and the rpms are suitable for upshifting.

If the bike has been sitting for months or years, then change the oil, oil filter and air filter.  Also properly clean the carbs, drain and reseal the fuel tank and REPLACE the fuel lines.

Good luck and ride safe.
