Motorcycle Repair: 2nd gear and clutch slippage - Vmax, yamaha v max, clutch slippage

Question
Hello,

I have a 1985 Yamaha V-max with 16600 miles totally stock in excellent condition. But, I've been noticing that when the V-boost kicks in it doesn't hit as hard as normal, it feels like its slipping in 2nd, 3rd and 4rth gears.  What could be the problem?  What type of parts would I need for a fix?

Thanks for any help,
Brian

Answer
Hi Brian.

While I am not familiar with the V-boost system, this sounds as if it may be related more to the clutch and transmission more than anything else.

If the bike doesn't feel as responsive in the clutch as it used to, then it could be the beginning of a need for a clutch rebuild.  That would require new clutchplates, frictionplates and springs.
Not a difficult thing to do, but will take some time.  The repair manual has detailed instructions for you to follow.  Refer to that for doing that job.

Good luck and ride safe.
