Motorcycle Repair: Front Shock Noise on 04 GSXR 750, country backroads, road shocks

Question
When going over rough surfaces on the road, shocks make a clunking noise.  All bolts are tight, just seems to make noise after shocks compress and are on their way up.  Could this possibly be springs or low oil levels in shocks?  If you could help, thanks.

Answer
Hi JD.

It could be a few things....all related to the mechanical workings of the shocks.

If the shocks are air/oil type, then it could be low air in them.

If the bike gets ridden a lot on rough roads, then it could just be their way of saying "CHANGE ME!!!!" because they are wearing out.

With shocks, their lifespan depends very heavily on a number of factors; Age/miles on bike, terrain ridden on in their lifespan, how the bike has been ridden/used/abused, type of shocks (light duty, heavy duty, etc.) and how often the bike is being ridden.

Naturally, if the bike spends a lot of time on smooth highway miles, the shocks will last longer than if the bike is ridden on country backroads that are not well maintained.

If you are concerned, then change them.  It is always better to err on the side of caution than to get hurt because you pushed a faulty or worn out part beyond it's limits.

Good luck and ride safe.
