Motorcycle Repair: fire in pipes at high rpms, drag pipes, air leaks

Question
working on a 81 shovel, I get fire and popping in the exshaust at a higher rpms, runns fine at low rpms. (work done)...cleaned carb.
Can you help thanx

Answer
Your condition is commonly caused by any or all of the following:  Running drag pipes with no baffles, too rich mixture in the main jet or needle, air leaks at the exhaust port connection to the pipes, or all of the above.  If you insist on running drag pipes without baffles you need to use a "torque chamber kit" from Drag Specialties, or "Torque Cones" from SAMSON exhaust or any other manufacturer.  They are just short metal cones that are inserted in the head-end of the exhaust pipe before it is bolted to the head.  They create just enough back pressure (without quieting the exhaust) to stop the pop and flames.  Good Luck!!
