Motorcycle Repair: 1997 rigid hardtail / 1974 shovel/97 EVO, cop bike, speedometer cable

Question
Hello sir, my name is mark and my question has to do with my triple trees (removal).I was told the front end was that of an old Kawasaki cop bike. I am tearing my bike down to repaint and service the motor. I am done with the exception of the triple trees and the motor and tranny. It looks as though where the mounting bracket that holds my brake lines( dual disc) and my speedometer cable on is a shaft that goes into my neck. At the bottom of the shaft is a hole, and inside the hole, it is threaded, so i cant get an allen wrench or anything to help wedge that so that i can loosen the top bolt that is holding that shaft on? I am clueless on what to do? thank you Mark.

Answer
Mark, I'm a Harley mechanic!!  BUT, every Kaw police bike that I worked on in the old days had a lower tree that was like HD in that it unscrews with a nut on TOP.  The threaded hole underneath is just for a cable bracket hold down screw.  There should be a pinch bolt on the top tree that you loosen.  Take of the top cap or cover (some unscrew with a strap wrench) and remove the stem nut after bending the tab on the lockwasher.  Take off the top tree and there should be another thin nut holding/and adjusting the bearing.  Take that nut off and the bottom tree falls out.  If your fork tubes are still on you should loosen the top and bottom pinch bolts and remove the tubes first.  You may not have to take off the top tube caps if they fit through the triple tree holes.  That's it.  Or, you can go to www.buykawasaki.com and look up exploded parts diagrams for any year Police bike until you find your exact front end.  I just checked it out and they are very clear. Good Luck and let me get back to wiring my totally rebuilt '62 Panhead lowriding street slammer!!
