Motorcycle Repair: 250 Kaw Bayou, valve adjustment, basket case

I bought an '03 250 kaw bayou on line and when it showed up it was a complete basket case. It was to be in graet condition, anyway... I've worked my way through and it will start but it is very hard to start and takes a while for it to idle on its own. After it is warm it still spits and sputters. I installed a new plug and looked through the carb which looks clean. I am wondering if maybe a valve adjustment is necesary? If so what should they be adjusted to? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm in upside down on this bad deal already! Thanks

before adjusting the valves take your cdi unit off take it to the nearest dealer have it checked sounds like it functions sometimes and sometimes it doesnt are is very weak . if you need more help im here o.k. please leave feedback for our volunterring .good luck if you need more im here buddy.
