Motorcycle Repair: 1974 Shovelhead, cid engine, big bore kit

Question
Hi Mike:  I have a '74 FXE Dyna, with the original '74 cid engine.  I would like to bore the engine and up the compression ratio a little to get a little more performance from the '74.  What do you recommend on max boring of the cylinders, and compression ratio...I live at 4000 feet, so I was considering maybe up to 10.0:1 might not be too much...however, it's tough to find pistons for the 74 with that compression ratio.  I really don't want to go with a big bore kit due to the additional machining, etc..  Any good ideas or places I can look.
Thanks for your time.  Roy in Montana

Answer
You can get 10:1 pistons for your 74" from Tedds V-Twin. The most you are goign to be able to bore it is .060 over. You are not going to really gain much by doing that.
I would suggest getting a better carb, like an S&S, and changing the cam for more performance
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
